PHRED V (Ballbot) being positioned on the field for the start of a matchIn 2006, the FRC game was called Aim High. Aim High was played by two alliances of three teams each on a 54 by 26 foot carpeted field. Robots scored points by throwing foam balls into one of three scoring goals at each end of the field. Additional points were awarded to robots that were on the alliance platform at the end of the match.
Each match started with a 10 second autonomous period during which the robots scored points without any human help. They relied entirely on programming and sensor input, rather than driver control. The autonomous period was followed by three 40-second teleoperated periods. During the first teleoperated period, only goals scored by the lowest autonomous scoring alliance counted for points. During the second teleoperated period, only the alliance with the highest autonomous score was allowed to score. Then during the last period, both alliances could score. At the end of the third period, all the robots rushed back to climb up a ramp onto their alliance platform for bonus points.
We built PHRED V, nicknamed Ballbot, to play Aim High. PHRED V was able to score balls into the higher middle goal, in both the tele-operated period under driver control and in the autonomous period with a camera to locate the goal.
