2009 - PHRED VIII
PHRED VIII competes at the Oregon FIRST Regional
In 2009 we build PHRED VIII to play the FRC game FIRST Lunacy. Lunacy was played on a 27 by 54-foot field called the Crater. The field of the Crater is covered with a polymer material called Regolith that, when used with the required "Rover Wheels", provides a low traction surface like that of the Moon. Two alliances of three robots each compete in each match. During the game, every robot tows a trailer that acts as the goal for the opposing alliance. Robots and human players called "Payload Specialists" score points by loading or throwing balls called "Moon Rocks" into the trailers attached to opposing alliances robots.
PHRED VIII was designed to pick up Moon Rocks off the playing field using a hooked conveyor belt and then shoot them into the opposing alliances robots trailers. PHRED VIII could also transport empty cells from the "Outposts" to the airlock to be exchanged for 15 point "Super Cells". At the Oregon Regional our robot placed 30th out of 54 teams and we received the Chrysler Team Spirit Award.
